Private Cremation FAQs

Private Cremation
Frequently Asked Questions

  • A Private Cremation - also known as a direct cremation, basic cremation, simple cremation, or an unattended cremation - is a cremation option with no funeral service or ceremony included. We are a dedicated Private Cremation specialist who provides these cremation services to our clients.

In simple terms, our Private Cremation service is the most basic form of cremation. Your loved one is collected and taken into our care, transferred to the crematorium, the cremation takes place without witnesses and we return the ashes directly to the family by hand. This also makes Private Cremation the most affordable option for families.

Alternatively our Bespoke Cremation takes place with a Crematorium service for you and your guests.

  • A Private Cremation is an increasingly popular alternative to a traditional funeral. A traditional cremation usually involves a ceremony, a viewing and a funeral home. A Private Cremation happens without a viewing, and allows families to create a personal memorial service before or after the cremation occurs. Importantly the flexibility it affords families to hold a highly personalised farewell.

  • Our care team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on

    +353 (0)85 848 5665 or via email – info@privatecremation.ie

  • We have a different business model to traditional funeral directors. By offering a simple package that can be arranged online or over the phone, we don’t have the same high overheads. We provide the highest quality of service. We have used technology to automate many manual processes, which allows us to pass on those savings to our customers.

  • Our prices are fully inclusive, with no hidden fees. A major reason Private Cremation was started was to offer an affordable, transparent and alternative funeral service.

  • Private Cremation operates across the whole island of Ireland.

  • Private Cremations are simple, no fuss and affordable.

There are many reasons why you might choose a Private Cremation instead of a traditional funeral, but the most common are cost and freedom of choice:

Cost – because the cremation is unattended, with no pre-funeral ceremony or service, it is cheaper than a traditional funeral.

Freedom of Choice – hold a farewell ceremony or event wherever you wish, at a time convenient for you, your family and friends.

Repatriation of Ashes - however daunting it may seem, we provide help with documentation and make the process as easy as possible.

  • When our Private Cremation service takes place the deceased is cremated without any ceremony or persons present.

Our Bespoke Cremation takes place with a crematorium service for you and your guests.

  • Absolutely, a Private Cremation is the direct transfer of your loved one to the crematorium and the returning of ashes.

Once the ashes are returned to the family and depending on the family’s wishes, a funeral or celebration ceremony can take place.

  • We provide a simple solid pine coffin to the deceased, carefully selected for its durability, elegance and good eco-credentials.

Our Standard coffin is 6’ 4” x 24” . If an oversized coffin is required there is no additional charge.

  • The timing of collection depends on where the passing occurs and how quickly the paperwork is completed and approved.

Sometimes we will be dictated by the location of collection, for example certain hospitals will have dedicated collection times that we must adhere to. Needless to say, we will always collect as soon as possible – and there are never any out of hours hidden fees.

  • Once we collect the deceased, we take them into our care. They are kept with full dignity and transferred for the crematoria.

  • The cremation takes place at one of Ireland’s 7 crematoriums in Dublin, Cork, Clare and Cavan.

  • After you have contacted our Care Team we will ask you to complete a cremation application form.

These documents are used for authorisation to cremate, transferring a person into our care from an institution (such as a hospital), and personal details for the registration of the passing.

Cremation form B is an application which must be completed and signed by the next of kin of the deceased or the executor of the estate only. It cannot be completed by a friend or common-law partner.

  • We always hand deliver directly to the family of the deceased. The ashes are returned in a simple Urn, approximately 5 - 7 days after the cremation has taken place.

  • You may request to not have the ashes returned after the cremation. If that is your wish, we will require a signature as confirmation. We can then scatter or dispose of the ashes on your behalf. The decision on the disposal of cremated remains is final and that decision cannot be reversed. We require written instruction if this is the case.

  • We take this responsibility very seriously and work with the crematoria to ensure that the correct process is followed.

The crematoria use a heat resistant ceramic stone. This accompanies your loved one throughout the cremation process. All cremations take place individually, coffins are cremated with the deceased and their identity is maintained throughout the process so that a family can be sure that they receive the correct remains.

Ashes are collected by Private Cremation and returned to families by hand.

  • Our care team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on +353 (0)85 848 5665 or via email – info@privatecremation.ie

On speaking with your dedicated support person, they will take some brief details and talk you through the process, along with answering any questions you have. Their role is to make sure everything is arranged, so you don’t have to worry. From there we will start to arrange collection and transportation of your loved one, along with commencing the required paperwork.
